It’s official—the rainy season is here! The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administartion (PAGASA) just declared the start of the wet season in the country. And, they are urging the general public to take all precautionary measures against the impacts of the rainy season.
Here’s how you can ensure your family’s safety during this time of year:
HEALTH:
1. Always carry an umbrella and other rain-protective gear wherever you go.
2. Eat healthy to stay healthy. The rainy season brings about all sorts of sickness from simple cough and colds to some really vicious cases of flu. Make sure you build your body’s resistance and immunity by consuming food that are rich in vitamins and minerals.
3. Wear mosquito repellant. There is a significant increase in mosquito population during the monsoon season. All it takes is one bite from these pesky little insects for you to catch various diseases. Stay protected and keep mosquito-borne diseases at bay.
4. Practice good personal hygiene. Get into the habit of showering twice a day—before you leave the house and right after you get home. This ensures that your body is free from any disease-carrying viruses and bacteria. Also, wash your hands regularly and very thoroughly, most especially before meals.
5. Stay hydrated. Drinking at least 6-8 glasses of warm water a day promotes better blood circulation, which in turn, helps strengthen your immunity.
HOME:
1. Have your emergency kit ready and stored in a strategic location. The kit may include your first aid kit with some basic medicine, a few bottles of drinking water, flashlight and extra batteries, ready-to-eat food, portable charger for your phone, and maybe some extra clothes and footwear.
2. Schedule regular check-ups for leaks. If there are leaks and cracks in your home, no matter how big or small, fix them as soon as possible. Don’t leave them as they are because they might potentially lead to even bigger problems like floods, mildews, and molds.
3. Clear your gutters and drains. See to it that they are free of any debris and objects that may cause clogs and overflows. Invest in cleaning tools to make this an easier task to do.
4. Have an evacuation plan. This monsoon season doesn’t only bring rain; it can also bring major weather disturbances like typhoons that can cause major property destructions. With that, it’s best that you sit down with the rest of your family and discuss what you have to do if worse comes to worst.
5. Regularly clean your house. You’ll be spending more time indoors than outdoors during this time of year. You got to make sure your abode is neat and spotless.
