Beat the Heat with These Tips

Summer in the Philippines is like no other. It’s extremely hot and humid. More often than not, the heat can get extremely unbearable. But have no fear, we’re here to provide you with tips to help you beat the heat.

HEALTH

  • Always wear sunscreen, whether you’re going to the beach or not. It’s very important to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun, especially during this time of year. Not only does sunscreen prevent sunburn, it also keeps melanoma at bay. Reapply if necessary.

  • Stay hydrated. This cannot be stressed enough. You need to drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday to ensure that your body is well-hydrated. If you always have trouble downing that much liquid in a day, try infusing your water with fresh fruits to add some flavors.

  • Exercise responsibly. Although summer heat should never be an excuse to skip your regular workout, safety should always come first. As much as possible, avoid working out when the heat and humidity are at their peak.

HOME

  • No AC? No problem! Here’s a very simple trick: fill a large bowl with ice cubes and put it in front of your electric fan. The fan will blow a much cooler, mistier air that will surely beat the summer heat.

  • Change your sheets. Sleeping can be extremely uncomfortable and sweaty during summer. One way to guarantee a good night’s rest is to switch your sheets to ones that are made of lighter and more breathable fabric such as cotton.

  • Keep unwanted heat away by simply keeping your blinds closed or curtains drawn, most specifically during late mornings to early afternoon.

  • Due to the rise of the environmental temperature, the risks of fire is higher during summer compared to any other months of the year. Be sure to practice all fire safety tips and guidelines.

  • Unplug all idle electrical appliances. Though unused, plugged appliances still produce heat. Moreover, schedule the use of any heat-producing appliances such as your oven, electric iron, and the like.
